Industry at the Cradle of European Immigration

In the pages of this book (Volume I), the reader will learn about the various stages of industrialization in the municipality of Limeira and will be able to identify striking details about the first enterprises and their entrepreneurs, who were not intimidated by the difficulties faced when starting a small business. Some of them, with a lot of work, without ever giving up on their aspirations, have ended up giving rise to solid industries, even if, at times, they had to face competition from large multinational corporations.

Limeira – National Capital of Plated Jewelery

Considering that Limeira is the largest Brazilian producing hub of plated jewels, and displays more than half of the national production in the sector, I have responded to the invitation of entrepreneur Wilson Antiqueira Dantas, owner of “Realen Folheados Indústria Comércio e Exportação Ltda.”, regarding the endeavour of research, aiming at publishing a book alluding to the history of the plated jewelry industry. Wilson has undertaken, in the company of his partner José Araújo de Oliveira, a very high-level management at the head of Realen. I was impressed with the performance of the company, and with the preliminary information regarding the sector, a fact that has encouraged me to dive into research, aiming at publishing the work “Limeira – The National Capital of Plated Jewelry”. Part of the text consists of records of testimonies collected from interviews with the main protagonists of a story, which began in the 1930s, and of articles published in the press. Whenever possible, I undertook research on original documents of the period in order to confirm the information collected from these sources, to present the readers with a work that records the facts that have possibly occurred from the 1930s to the present day.

Vogt has worked with contact zones. In her paintings, image is not framed as a closed form, but as matter in suspension. It is in process, in a continuous flow of relation with the outside, the extra image and the bodies that perceive them. The disembodied heads of both people and animals, the bodies without a defined gender or with imprecise contours, are not mere formal elements: they are visual statements about the instability of identity, about the collapse of form as an instrument of recognition and classification. There is, therefore, a political movement in the refusal of visual normativity – the body, here, is not a place of identity, but of sensitivities and intensities.

Three Pavilions by Sergio Bernardes: Contribution to the Brazilian…

As part of the second generation of modern architects from Rio de Janeiro – at least one decade separated him from the first group of modern architects acting in Rio, such as Lúcio Costa (1902-1998), Jorge Machado Moreira (1904-1992), Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012) and Affonso Eduardo Reidy (1909-1964) -, Sérgio Bernardes (1919-2002) was a son of the new times. Graduated in 1948 at the National School of Architecture of the University of Brazil, currently the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, his work began to consolidate precisely in the post-war period, when the North American culture was imposed as the greatest reference in the Brazilian context, leaving the European influence – and the French, as its greatest expression in the country16 – in the background.

A River Does Not Exist Alone

A river does not exist alone condensates and celebrates much of this trajectory and of what we understand to be the role of a cultural institution today, in Brazil and in the world. Nothing exists alone – not a river, nor a people, nor social organizations, nor countries –, and we are all part of this circle of life. Enacting together is the first step toward, in some way, contributing to the survival and coexistence of many worlds. This begins with the privilege of engaging and learning from Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, which, since its founding more than a century ago, has approached the Amazon as an entire universe.

The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 30) means, for us, an opportunity to bring visibility to artists, knowledges, and creations that connect with ecological thinking and expand our repertoire regarding life on Earth. Yet, it is important to note that the conference is not our driving force: our purpose is art, life, and the sharing of the world.

The interactivity during Marcelo Barbosa’s English classes resulted in the translation into English for this volume that is an outspread of his master and doctoral research. Barbosa is a Mackenzie University professor and founding partner of Bacco Arquitetos Associados. During his research, he analyzed the architectural production by Adolf Franz Heep in light of the postwar development of the city of Sao Paulo, assisting in the construction of the emerging metropolis between 1945 and 1960.

With much unpublished information, the publication highlights Heep’s main projects, photographed by Ana Mello, and adds biographical information, analysing the various interlocutions in the architect’s work and their relationship with the city, as well as the cultural transposition, where a set of principles from his home environment, Germany of the 1920s and France of the 1930s, will have several adjustments to their intermingling with Brazil’s cultural environment.

The book was also launched in Portugal.

This work began in the discipline Vertical Studio of the first term of 2013 at Escola da Cidade, School of Architecture and Urbanism, with the group composed by the students: Marília Franco, Natalia Coachman, Raquel Pavanelli, Johanna Miklos and Claudia Mezquita. It was based on the study entitled “Study for technical, economic and environmental pre-viability for the metropolitan waterway ring”, developed in 2011 by the research group in architecture design of urban fluvial infrastructures, Grupo Metrópole Fluvial, from the Department of Design of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP).

During the first semester of 2018, the EV and the XIII International Seminar, from the motto “Architecture is a form of knowing”, have developed diverse researches through integrated work among professors, guests, assistants and students, as we can learn from the small selection in this catalog.

From the motto “Occupy SP”, proposed by the EV in the second semester of 2018, some new researches have begun and are represented in this catalog, as they will be present in the exhibition of the XIV International Seminar –“Still the right to the city?” to be held at Escola da Cidade in February 2019, being the basis for the proposals to be developed in the SI week itself and also for the first semester of the EV.”
